Lisandro Martínez Biography
Lisandro Martínez (born 18 January 1998) is an Argentine professional footballer who mainly plays as a central defender for Premier League club Manchester United and the Argentina national team. Martínez started his career with Newell’s Old Boys before moving to Defensa y Justicia on loan in 2017. He signed for Ajax in 2019 where he made 120 appearances in three seasons and won two Eredivisie titles and a KNVB Cup.
He was named Player of the Year for the 2021/22 season by Ajax . Martínez represented Argentina at U20 and U23 levels before making his senior international debut in March 2019.He was a member of the Argentina teams that won the 2021 Copa America, the 2022 Finalism and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Newell’s Old Boys Martínez played at Club Urquiza (Gualeguay, Entre Ríos), Club Libertad (Gualeguay, Entre Ríos) and Newell’s Old Boys as a youth. He made his professional debut for Newell’s in the club’s last game of the 2016–17 season, playing the entire game in a loss to Godoy Cruz. Defense and JusticeIn August 2017, Martínez joined Defense y Justicia in Argentina’s First Division on a loan deal.

Two appearances later, he scored his first senior goal in an away win against Temporally. Defense and Justice bought 50% of the rights to Martínez in June 2018.
Ajax On May 17, 2019, Defense and Justice announced that an agreement had been reached with Ajax from the Eredivisie; subject to a medical examination. Ajax paid the Argentinian team €7m for the transfer of Martínez. Ajax announced the completion of the medical on May 20 and the transfer will take place on July 1.
He signed a four-year contract with an option for an additional year. He didn’t officially join until July, although he played in friendlies with Quick ’20 and AaB in June.
Before Ajax signed him, they followed his development for two and a half years. His competitive bow came in the 2019 Johan Cruyff Shield against PSV Eindhoven when Ajax lifted the trophy after a two-goal win. .
He was voted man of the match in his second Eredivisie game; in a win over FC Emmen. Manchester United On 16 July 2022, it was announced that Manchester United had reached an agreement with Ajax to sign Martínez for a reported fee of between £47m and £49m, plus £8.5m in fringe benefits.
The transfer was officially completed on July 27 when Martínez signed a five-year deal with the club.
